COME GET THIS RAIN

Vivian Phillips

Legendary music producer Sylvia Robinson is best known for her role in releasing the first rap song to air nationwide, Rapper's Delight, by the Sugarhill Gang. This may be considered one of her most significant contributions to the music world, but there is another considerable credit due her.

Sylvia Robinson is responsible for signing the female group Sequence, comprised of Cheryl Cook, Gwendolyn Chisholm, and Angie Stone. While Sequence released three albums and enjoyed some success, it would be Angie Stone and her distinctive smoky, textured voice that would endure across generations.

Stone's tragic death on March 1st, has left us all cried out and there's no more rain in these clouds. You can read the full obituary of Angie Stone here.

In just a few days on April 2nd, we celebrate what would have been the 86th birthday of soul music impresario Marvin Gaye. Gaye who was known for his unique renditions of previously recorded music, delivered his first live show in five years on January 4, 1974 at the Oakland-Alameda Coliseum before a crowd of 14,000. Now, this full performance, Marvin Gaye Live!: Deluxe Edition on Motown/Universal will be released on March 28, 2025, making it available to the masses.
