THE MARTYR SAUCE GUIDE TO ETIQUETTE

Known for her larger-than-life, vibrant, satirical artworks and beloved Pioneer Square galleries—Martyr Sauce and MS PAM (Martyr Sauce Pop Art Museum)—Tariqa Waters is always telling a story that we want in on.

Young Black woman in a funky dress poses with a giant box of Jiffy and stands on a giant sculpture imitating a butter stick.

Now she's moving beyond public artworks, television shows, and the canvas to create something that gives us all an exclusive "in" to her world—and it will fit perfectly on your bookshelf or coffee table—an upcoming book entitled Who Raised You? A Martyr Sauce Guide to Etiquette. Tariqa's first book is both a survey of her paintings, sculptures, installations, and public works of the last decade and a primer on navigating the challenges and opportunities of a family’s creative life.

"[Tariqa Waters' world] is a space of strength and laughter, of family and music, where beauty is celebrated, and misogyny and racism are trapped in used bubble gum and thrown in the trash."

As an artist and an advocate for others, Tariqa Waters has always been a community builder. As HER advocates here at ARTE NOIR, we're looking to the community to participate in the publication of her first book, through Minor Matters!

For the last decade, Minor Matters has used a collaborative publishing model to bring the public into the process of making books of significant art + ideas. Tariqa and Minor Matters are seeking 500 people to pre-order her book. Everyone who purchases a copy will have their names acknowledged in the final print. Join us today by placing your pre-order and adding YOUR name to one of our favorite artist's publications.
